In the ever-evolving, fast-paced world of today, the expectations and challenges faced by our youth are constantly changing. As educators, who play a crucial role in shaping tomorrow’s leaders, it is essential to provide students with the skills needed to thrive in the 21st century. This is where the Future Skills Summit proved to be invaluable.
The Future Skills Summit took place in the first half of 2024 at QUT Kelvin Grove Campus and Bond University in Gold Coast, held by Groei Education. With 200 high school students in attendance, the event focused on preparing them for the future’s challenges and opportunities. This dynamic event aimed to inspire and equip young minds with the critical skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in a complex and rapidly changing world.
A key feature of the Future Skills Summit was its immersive workshops, covering a wide range of topics from artificial intelligence and robotics to sustainability and creative problem-solving. These hands-on sessions offered students the chance to interact with cutting-edge technologies and explore innovative ideas in a supportive environment. Students chose 2 out of the 6 available workshop streams, which included:
Health, Wellbeing, and Food, Gaming, AR, XR, and Sports, Design Creative Streaming, Robotics, Drones, and Manufacturing, AI, Cyber, and Analytics and Climate and Energy.
One of the most popular workshops was the AR, XR, and Sports stream, led by the Australian Computer Society (ACS). Facilitators Matthew Jorgensen and Cynthia Gusman-Nolan provided students with practical skills through a supportive gaming hands-on workshop.
In addition to the workshops, participants had the opportunity to hear from keynote speakers who are experts and thought leaders in various industries. These speakers shared their insights and experiences, offering valuable guidance to students as they embarked on their own paths to success.
The summit also featured a Career Pathways Panel, chaired by students, which provided insights into emerging career opportunities. This panel was a highlight for many attendees, as student panelists discussed their own startup journeys and perspectives on the future of skills. They also offered practical advice on how to prepare for future opportunities and challenges during an informal Q&A session.
One of the most significant benefits of the Future Skills Summit was the chance for students to network with peers, industry professionals, educators, and potential mentors. Establishing these connections early on could play a crucial role in shaping a student’s future and opening doors to exciting opportunities.
The next Future Skills Summit is scheduled for May–June 2025. For updates, visit www.futureskillssummit.com.au.
